Kanner Explores Her Transition From Prolific Songwriter To Iconic Artist

Kanner jokes she is sporting a “low-key, under the radar look” as she demands the room in bulky, bright green shades, a full body camouflage jumpsuit, and her iconic red locks in high braids. She’s a rockstar from head to toe and everyone can see it. A prolific and well-respected writer with accolades all across the music industry, she notes that she is feeling “fucking amazing” now that she has released music of her own.

Earlier this year, Kanner dropped her debut single “BULL IN A CHINA SHOP” featuring 93FEETOFSMOKE. An attitude filled, explosive pop-rock track, it showcases the best parts of Kanner’s song-writing abilities and her obvious ear for a hit. “Somebody piss me off // I’m a bull in a china shop // You better put a helmet on // I’ma scream ’till I rip my lungs” she delivers aggressively in the chorus, making it known that she is entirely badass. It was the perfect introduction to who Kanner is an artist herself. The follow-up single, “MEGAPHONE MOUTH” only cements her place in the scene. This track explores a much different soundscape, leaning into the hyperpop world while still teetering on the verge of rock and pop, and even metal elements. Of course, the chorus is catchy as hell and we wouldn’t expect anything less.

It is refreshing to see a visionary known for their contributions to honing and developing the sound and likes of other artists, take the dive into their own universe of self-made art. Kanner is doing this and doing this exceptionally. Praised as having a “lethal pen” in the writing world, she has written for PVRIS, LOLO, Oxymorons, The Lunar Year, Rain City Drive, and more. Most impressively perhaps, is her credit for working with Katy Perry on “Electric“, a tune crafted as the theme song for the 2021 Pokèmon 25th Anniversary Campaign. Katy Perry AND Pokèmon!? Pretty damn sick.

Recently she has cut hits with Scene Queen, Honey Revenge, Royal & the Serpent, McKenna Grace, Siiickbrain, and Rebecca Black, proving her ability to glide across soundscapes and genres, blazing a trail of success along the way. Is there anything Kanner can’t write? We’ve yet to be proven otherwise.

Originally from Chicago, she moved New York for four years to attend school while interning at a few record labels before ultimately moving to California in 2013. “I walked for graduation and then moved to Los Angeles the next day”, she shares. “Moving to LA and wanting to work in the industry, when you get here you feel like you’ve landed on the moon.” It didn’t take her long to find her footing. “Some of it is luck, but it is a LOT of persistence, you have to put yourself in the right place at the right time and you have to be a good person. No one wants to work with an asshole.”

Making art is extremely vulnerable but Kanner understands what it takes to connect to an artist. She makes them feel comfortable enough to share their deepest thoughts and feelings. “It’s about getting to know someone and getting them to trust you. You want them to feel comfortable and that wherever you are is a safe space so that they can emotionally unload what they are going through.”

This is only the tip of the iceberg in her chat with the lovely Nick Major. Make sure to watch the whole interview to get the inside scoop on all things, Kanner. We can’t wait for more news on her upcoming EP, future co-writes, and anything and everything else she has in store.
