Slater In The Wings At Capitol Records

Music producer and manager Andy Slater, whose clients include Macy Gray, Fiona Apple and The Wallflowers, has been confirmed as the new president and chief executive at Capitol Records.

Slater will begin May 1, EMI Recorded Music, Capitol’s parent, said Tuesday. The hire had been expected.

The company has been without a president since 1998, when Gary Gersh stepped down amid concerns over sluggish sales. EMI’s U.S. deputy president Roy Lott has been heading the company since then.

“Capitol Records is one of the greatest names in the music business with an incredibly storied history and rich heritage,” Slater said. One of the top priorities, Slater said, will be to “add fresh talent to (Capitol’s) already legendary roster.”

The Los Angeles-based company, founded in 1942, has been the home to such legendary musicians as The Beach Boys, The Beatles, Pink Floyd and Frank Sinatra.
